Patrons response and FAQ's.

In view of my renewed comittment to surf more and better this year I investigated the Surfconditions site (http://www.surfconditions.co.za/) again. I subscribed last year for 3 months but couldn't get the webcam to work on my PC so didn't renew. I noticed that they now provide a webcam derived static picture every 30 seconds so I figured that this was well worth it for the R350 annual fee. Anyway, I subscribed today and the guy who runs the service phoned me (the webcam is on the flats opposite Bay of Plenty) and the webcam is now working on my PC - its fantastic - you can see dudes catching waves, check out where the least crowded spots are etc. So I'm totally chuffed although its going to be difficult to focus on work when I can see that conditions are cooking ...
Dan
Thanks for the nice e-mail Dan
Hi,This is a fantastic website – Thanks so much !!!! Anne
Hi, David, Thanks for contacting me - the service is great and well worth the fee !!! I've just logged on to your home page - hope I'm entered for the Clayton board - I really need a new one !! Kindest regards, Deon

Hey what up? Just found your site yesterday. Been looking for something like this for a long time. Very cool setup. Is there a reason why u guys don't do umhlanga or bluff?
Response
7 days a week form 04h30 in the morning takes dedication and a passion for surfing. We will be entering other areas soon. We do offer business opportunities for various areas. For more info and pricing structures email:

To whom it may concern.......... just would like to say that site is freaking rad and keep it going as i did write a couple of weeks back to you guys and always cool to do the surf check during the day as love to know what New Pier is doing............ keep the surf checks going...
Howzat Bill here. Hey london freezing and durbans firing. The site looks cool.
Got this really cool website from Clint See ya Brenda from New Zealand p.s. Love the pics!!!!
Howzit dude, your site rocks. Just one question though - why is the last update at 13:00? It would be cool to see what the surf is doing just before leaving work, like say between 4 - 4:30. Any chances ?
Response
Updates are only done according to the change in conditions. However we will look into this.
Thanks again for the great website. Just a thought… why not include warnings of blue bottles and or jelly fish in your description of the day’s conditions? We all know that the easterlies generally push the buggers towards the beach, but it would be nice if you could let us know if there’s a whole army washing up on shore. What do you think?
Response
Excellent Idea. Will do our best.
hi - thanks for a great website, very informative - no easy job taking pics every morning and updating the website! My only advice is to change the red text on the blue box to white on blue - the red and blue clash and make it hard to read. Otherwise, keep up the good work!
Response
The colour has been adjusted according to requests from people who view the site on cell phones. We will be looking at a colour that suits all in the near future
Hi, I dont like the distance shots.Close ups are far better.
Just thought i would let you guys know; with the pictures being taken from so far up, we don't really get the idea of what the wave is like. i am on your website nearly all the time and much prefer the pictures taken from the pier. But other than that, this site is siek. Shot
Re: Your feedback request on the images provided by your webcam it does not provide as much info on conditions as the images shot from the piers. I don't know what the logistics are for that option, buts its great to have such a facility to look and catch up on conditions.
Response
Generally it is the choice of the photographer and the situation at the time. Eg: Access to the beach, transport problems etc.
Surfconditions priority is to upload the images at the correct time. Remember the name "Surfconditions". Not "best wave of the day" or "best spot of the day. The photo's are there for you to get an idea of the conditions. Photographers cannot wait for a set as it takes up to 40 minutes just to cover the 10 spots, then we still need to format and upload.

Hi, I would like to thank you for your awesome site. It really comes in handy form people living far from the beach. I would how ever like to know if there are any plans to add the bluff beaches to your site? The bluff beaches are usually a good alternative when the surf is small in town. Shot allot and take care. William

Coming Soon!!
Pic of the month Much better choice in place of Umdlodi, which was a was of time. Hope to to see some more.
Thanks so much for the great website! Don’t like the pics taken from high up, I much prefer them to be taken from the piers or the beach. You can get a much better idea of what the surf is doing from these angles. Regarding how you have taken pics a couple of times from a high point, I think that its not to bad but you can't always get a feel for how the waves really look. So, personally I prefer it when the pics are taken from off the pier.
This is rubbish, how are you supposed to see what the surf is like when the camera is placed so high.
Response
The webcam would not cover 180 degrees and 10 spots if it was any lower. We are however still in development stages and will be dealing with the zoom issue.
I am a South African living in London and I look at the site every day just to remind myself what I am missing out on.

WEB CAM: That’s is fricken amazing!!!!!! I love it. Well done. boogaloos
Thanks for a great website. I am stuck in London, waiting for my return to Durban (hopefully 2007). This motivates me even more, to remind myself how great the beaches in Durban are. The new Snake Park webcam is great too. Any more cams like this planned? Cheers, Chris
Shot for the cool website, makes such a difference when wanting to go for a surf. The webcams are even better though!
This is a great website, keep up the good work. Just one question, why don't you guys have Battery and Blue Lagoon on there as well?
Thanks for the site. It brings Durban into the 21st century and really helps save time and petrol.
As I have said before, this is a stunning service and almost every surfer I know uses your site as their default web site so it is continually on in the background.
This is absolutely fantastic :) To be able to get an up-to-date visual of the Durban surf conditions from my office @ Mondi Business Paper in Merebank is wicked. Thanx to the photographer and the team that looks after the site . Awesome initiative - something the durban surfers will appreciate hugely :) Way to go guys . gozz
Really think that you guys are doing a great job with the up dates as i surf at new pier as a whole and so stoked i can check my spot out whilst i'm at work...... keep it up guys.
By the way congraulations on an excellent site. Rusty
We find your reports to be invaluable to us especially around 7.00am on a Sunday morning, however I have noticed lately and including this morning that there have been no updates. Is there a logical explanation for this or are you guys enjoying a bit of shut eye.(WE ALWAYS UPDATE.(REFRESH))
Just a quick one to let you know that you are doing every single surfer the biggest of favours by running this website! There is of course a down side... that is that when its happening the crowds pull in!!! But never the less im hooked on your website!! Thanks for all the effort and keep those pics coming!!!
Response
Wish we could get the shut eye thing. The only factors affecting a session from not happening are:
- A telkom line upgrade that would prevent us from uploading.
- Our photographer is hijacked(more likely).

Just a short note to thank you for making every morning absolute hell for myself and my mates in london!!! even when the surf is crap we get to work, log on, and call each other saying "have you checked the surf?" wicked site, makes us all miss home a hell of a lot! " a crap day in durban is better than the best day in london!!!!"
aay shot os this site is so rad bru. now i dont have 2 mission down to see how good it is then mision back to get my board and crap. ya shundies 4 the site!!!
I just wanted to say that I think the sight is great! It is the first thing I look at when I get to work in the morning. I've been in London for almost 10 months now and seeing the ocean and beautiful sunny days back home makes the grey days here bearable! Can't wait to get back to Durbs! Thanks. Elmarie
Howzit, I am trying to check out the webcam but I’m being tuned I need a password and stuff. Can you elp please? Shot. PS Lekker site.

Not long to go - I have already been here two weeks and after looking at the site well I really miss home . Regards to all and to Malcolm who had the heart attack . Cheers for now . MOUSE

Hi,Really good site thats so convenient...keep it up. Maybe the pic attached can find its way onto your site. Keep well, Casey.
The webcam which covers the beach is brilliant, I have yet to find an equivilent anywhere in the world, well done, a question how many people can have control at any given time? Regards Parry Brown
Response
The cam is still under development regarding zoom, bandwith, etc and as a result has often been left "open" while we have been working on the interface. Unfortunately in the near future the camera will be locked for this very reason. We have had people " complaing" that they cannot control the camera. but then leave the camera facing into the clouds. This is not good for the next viewer. The cam will be set to pan 180 degrees over all the beaches, stopping at various surf spots for 30 seconds to 1 minute. This will eliminate the need to control the camera.

Left after a life in Durban for far away New Zealand 6 years ago. Your gallery pics of Durbs beaches, waves, piers brings it all back. each break, time of day, comes back so clearly - even the odd mushy easterly day looks great. Even the fishermen on the piers. Very nostalgic stuff - hope you guys appreciate what you have. Only really get to understand its value when you are away from it for so long. Keep those pics alive -and lets hope for a big swell and a north west this weekend! Ralph
